Harmer Interview - 21st March 2011
Interviewed By Charlotte Wingrove from Amersham
Buckinghamshire, Age 10
How did you get the part of Tracy Beaker?
I was 12 years old, [a very long time ago now!] and was asked to go for
an audition. Firstly I had to learn a script and I went to meet the
producer and the director where I did my first audition. Apparently,
they really liked it and asked me to come back to read with two of the
other characters, Justine and Ben. Then about one week after, I found
out that I got the part. I was thrilled!
Why did you want to become an actress?
I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was 3 years old - I don’t really
know why but I have always loved going to the theatre and watching
musicals which inspired me to follow my dreams.
What do like about the character Tracy Beaker and are you
alike in any ways?
There’s a lot of things I like about Tracy, she’s a really interesting
and feisty character to play - one minute she’s happy, the next she’s
sad and then could be screaming her head off at some one! I don’t think
we’re similar really. The only thing we have in common is our bossiness
but I’m generally much more laid back than Tracy.
What would you do if you weren’t an actress?
I don’t know, I always used to love dancing so I would probably try and
do a bit more of that. If not, I would like to work behind the camera
instead of in front of it – maybe producing. I would definitely want to
stay in the entertainment industry.
Who is your role model?
There’s so many brilliant actors and actresses out there probably Julie
Walters who was in Harry Potter. She’s always been a massive inspiration
to me but I love Johnny Depp as well!
Where is Tracy Beaker filmed?
The story of “Tracy Beaker” is filmed in Cardiff and “Tracy Beaker
Returns” is filmed in Newcastle.
How long does it take to film one episode?
It can vary really; depending on where the episode is set. We had one
episode which took place in the countryside which took about a week but
normally an episode takes about three days.
Which episode is your favourite?
I’ve got about 200 to choose from! That’s such a difficult question. We
did have one episode where we formed a “dumping ground” band and I
always remember that being really, really fun.
In “Tracy Beaker Returns” probably the one in the
countryside because we got to “leave” the dumping ground for a whole
week which was really cool.
Are you close to the people you work with?
Yes, I’ve known Darragh [Jack] from “Dani’s House” for a long time.
Also, I met up with Richard who plays Liam the other day. We are all
very close because we spend so much time together and it is too hard at
the end of filming to just say bye and go our separate ways. We always
have plans to meet up soon.
Who’s the funniest person on set?
All the children on set are massive characters, they really are
hilarious. I’d probably have to say Amy who plays Carmen because she’s
absolutely bonkers!
When can I buy your new DVD “Tracy Beaker Returns”?
I am so excited as it is released today! I’m back at the ‘Dumping
Ground’ except this time I’m working there as an assistant care worker.
As usual, things get really complicated, like when I get arrested…and
that’s just the beginning! There’s plenty more drama and fun times with
Mike, Cam, Gina and all the gang!
Can you tell me more about your current project “Dani’s
House?”
It’s a brilliant sitcom about an aspiring actress and musician who is
forever being left in charge of her annoying younger brother – that’s me
of course!
We’re filming it in Edinburgh and have two new very cool
characters and a very cute little girl! Keep watching to find out more!
What was it like growing up in the public eye?
It was a bit difficult, particularly during the teenage years when you
have frizzy hair, spots and braces. “Normal” teenagers can hide away if
they want but I was in front of the camera and in full view!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
This might sound really boring but I like just doing nothing – I stay in
my p.js all day, watch telly and eat lots of chocolate.
I know you have recently visited some care homes and have
done a report for Newsround – how was this experience?
It was a great experience as I have played Tracy Beaker for so many
years and met many children in care but never actually spent time in a
real care home. I learnt a lot.
What other TV shows would you like to be in? Would you
like to take part in “Dancing on Ice” or “The Cube?”
Oh, I’ve watched “The Cube” and I would be absolutely terrified to do
that but I do love Phillip Schofield – so you never know! Maybe not
“Dancing On Ice” because I’d worry about hurting my face or losing my
teeth! But I’d love to do “Strictly Come Dancing” or “Doctor Who”
definitely. |
